Tour Destinations
Here are some of our featured destinations. This is not a complete list of the nearly 90 locations we visit.
Basilica of the Assumption
The responsibility of building the the first Catholic cathedral in the United States fell to Bishop John Carroll (relative of Charles Carroll of Carrollton) in the early 1800's. The newly ratified Constitution now allowed all faiths to worship openly and Carroll wanted to build a uniquely “American” cathedral, rather than a Gothic style structure that would conjure images of Europe and the dark ages, so he enlisted the help of Benjamin Henry Latrobe. Construction began in 1806 and the cathedral was dedicated in 1821.
Billie Holiday's Childhood Home
This lot was once home to “The East Side Grille”, a restaurant opened by Holiday's mother. Just blocks from the Pennsylvania Ave. club circuit, it's likely a teenage Billie once scrubbed marble stoops in the neighborhood for money, ran errands at the local brothel, and first sang in area establishments.
Enoch Pratt Library
The Pratt Library was established in 1882 with a gift from philanthropist Enoch Pratt and is one of the country's first free public library systems with branches. Construction on the current building began in 1931 and is home to the H.L. Mencken room.
Hotel Belvedere
Named for the estate of John Eager Howard, The Hotel Belvedere opened in December of 1903. Woodrow Wilson stayed in the hotel in 1911 during Democratic National Convention that would nominate him for the presidency. Today the hotel has been converted into luxury rental condominiums.
Maryland Institute College of Art
The Maryland Institute College of Art was founded in 1826 making it the oldest continuously operating degree-granting college of art in the nation. The surrounding Mt. Royal neighborhood hosts Artscape every summer, the country's largest free arts festival.
